American Idiot Opens on Broadway (and the Internet)

American Idiot Broadway ShowThe new musical American Idiot, based on the Grammy Award-winning Green Day album of the same name (and featuring arrangements by Next To Normal composer Tom Kitt), opens on Broadway tonight at the St. James Theatre. The musical about disaffected suburban youth in search of something more is also having opening night festivities online, which ticket-less fans can enjoy from the comfort of their home. At AmericanIdiotOnBroadway.com, fans can see red carpet footage, video and images from the after party, and Twitter updates from the show's cast and creative team. American Idiot, which stars John Gallagher Jr. (Spring Awakening), Rebecca Naomi Jones (Passing Strange), Michael Esper, Tony Vincent, and Stark Sands, comprises all the songs from Green Day's hit album, including "When September Ends" and "Boulevard of Broken Dreams," plus a few songs from the band's new album 21st Century Breakdown, most notably "21 Guns". The musical's original Broadway cast album was also released today.

American Idiot Broadway ShowYou can get a preview of the upcoming Broadway musical American Idiot tonight during the broadcast of the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards ceremony when the show's cast perform along with band Green Day. The rock musical, which premiered last year at California's Berkeley Rep, is based on Green Day's acclaimed album American Idiot as well as its recent release, 21st Century Breakdown. The Grammy Awards will be broadcast live on CBS at 8pm Eastern standard time.

Green Day American Idiot Broadway MusicalThe new musical American Idiot, which just enjoyed an acclaimed run at the Berkeley Rep in California, is getting closer to securing a Broadway berth. Ever since the project was announced, insiders always anticipated it would eventually make it to Broadway, and now casting notices and hopeful quotes from publicity reps indicate that the musical is on track for the Great White Way. However, exact dates and a theater have yet to be secured, so the show's New York future is not yet certain. Directed by Michael Mayer, American Idiot is a new musical based on the Green Day album of the same name. The rock musical, which has musical supervision by Tom Kitt (Next To Normal), also features songs from Green Day's most recent album, "21st Century Breakdown".

John Gallagher Jr. To Star in Green Day's New American Idiot Musical

John Gallagher Jr.Principal casting for the upcoming musical version of Green Day's hit album American Idiot has been announced. Talented Tony-winning actor John Gallagher Jr. (Spring Awakening, Rabbit Hole) will star as Johnny, and he will be joined by Tony Vincent (Jesus Christ Superstar) as St. Jimmy, Michael Esper (A Man For All Seasons) as Will, Matt Caplan (Rent) as Tunny, Rebecca Naomi Jones (Passing Strange) as Whatsername, and Mary Faber (Avenue Q) as Heather, as well as a large ensemble of youthful performers. The production, which will open at the Berkeley Rep in September, will re-unite John Gallagher Jr. with his Spring Awakening director, Michael Mayer.

Green Day's American Idiot To Become Musical

The band Green Day are developing their 2004 album "American Idiot" into a stage musical. The show, which will include all of that CD's songs as well as some from their newest release "21st Century Breakdown," is scheduled to premiere at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre on September 4. Michael Mayer (Spring Awakening) serves as director and co-writer (along with Green Day front man Billie Joe Armstrong) of the musical, titled American Idiot. The show will feature an onstage band and a cast of 19 performers.
